Schedule of Events

Thursday April 15
Noon---Thursday’s trips begin to depart for various caves. See info posted at hotel.
4:00 - 8:00 P.M.--- Registration at the Brier Inn.
8:00 - 11:00 P.M.--- Social (in the Friars Hill Room).

Friday April 16
(All daytime sessions are in the River Oak Room, upstairs in the Brier Inn).
8:30 A.M,--- Welcome: Jeff Bray, President of the West Virginia Cave Conservancy.

8:40 A.M.---Introduction of Conservancies. Five minutes from each conservancy to introduce the organizations.

10:40 - 11:00 A.M.---Break

11:00 A.M.---Session 1: Protecting Special Places with Conservation Easements
Beth Wheatley, The Nature Conservancy-West Virginia

12:00-1:00 P.M.---Lunch

1:00 P.M.---Session 2: The Whys and Hows of Management Plans
Thom Engel, Past NSS Caves Acquisition Chairman

2:00 P.M.---Session 3: Insurance: Who needs it?
Robert Addis, President of the Northeastern Cave Conservancy

3:00 - 3:20 P.M.---Afternoon Break

3:20 P.M.---Session 4: Creative Partnerships for Karst Protection ­ How To
Kriste Lindberg, Indiana Karst Conservancy Director and Chair of the IKC Education and Outreach Committee

8:00 P.M.---Discussion Session 1 (Friars Hill Room): A formatted open forum where the audience offers topics of discussion which are listed and then worked through. Key points are then listed as discussion proceeds so a summary of the meeting can be reprinted.

Saturday April 17

8:15 A.M.---Session 5: Managed Access to Conservancy Caves and Lands
Emily Davis, Past manager and present access coordinator for the Northeast Cave Conservancy and Northeast National Speleological Society properties.

8:45 A.M.---Session 6: Managing and Protecting Biological Resources: Bats, Bugs, and Ferns, David Culver, Professor of Biology at American University and an associate of the Karst Waters Institute.

9:45 - 10:00 A.M.---Morning Break

10:00 A.M.---Session 7: The Land Trust Alliance Perspective
Rane Curl, Past president of both the National Speleological Society and The Michigan Karst Conservancy.

11:00 A.M.---Begin Paper sessions---"The Value of Delineating Recharge Areas for Critical Caves: A Case History from Tumbling Creek Cave, Missourri."
Tom Aley, Ozark Underground Laboratory, Inc.

11:30 A.M.---"How to Obtain an NSS Grant to Help Purchase Cave or Karst Land"
Philip Moss, NSS Cave and Karst Acquisition Chair.

12:00 -1:00 P.M.---Lunch

1:00 P.M.---"Deferred Giving for Conservation". Ted Kayes, Treasurer, Virginia Karstlands.

1:30 P.M.---"The John Guilday Cave Preserve: Twenty years later". Frederick Grady, David R. West, and Robert B. Hoke.

2:00 P.M.--- “Restoration/Conservation Practices Of the Carroll Cave System, Camden Co., MO” Edgar Simmons, Carroll Cave Conservancy.

2:30 P.M.---“Searching for Bits of History” Bob Handley, WVCC.

3:00 - 3:20 P.M.---Afternoon Break

3:20 P.M.--- Meeting of the National Speleological Society Cave Conservancies
Committee. John Wilson.

8:00 P.M. Discussion Session 2 (Friars Hill Room).

Sunday, April 18

Informal cave trips will be offered to local caves. See information provided at hotel.
